DOPE LEMON Essentials

DOPE LEMON Essentials

Ostensibly a solo project for Angus Stone–one half of brother-sister duo Angus & Julia Stone–DOPE LEMON exists in a hazy, smoky, languid world of late-night jams. You can hear it in the woozy meanderings of “Hey You”, in the way that “Salt & Pepper” melts out of the speakers, and in the psychedelic overtones of “Stonecutters”. Despite utilising that heavy-lidded mood, DOPE LEMON incorporate a surprisingly diverse set of instruments into their world, with banjo (“Stonecutters”), sitar (“Honey Bones”) and horns (“Every Day Is a Holiday”, featuring Winston Surfshirt) all present. Even when the distortion is turned on and the tempo is raised on “Uptown Folks”–a song about losing sight of what’s important in the chase to acquire possessions–the mood remains resolutely horizontal.
