Djanaba starting writing “Times Like SIS”—the first track from her to-be-released debut—a while back, but “the intro was an original melody l couldn’t forget,” she tells Apple Music. “Normally, I’m a spontaneous writer, but l couldn’t let go of these lyrics, and when l started producing l knew l wanted to use this melody,” says the Wiradjuri and Bundjalung singer, songwriter and producer of the bright, wistful dance-pop track. “The rest of the song just slowly wrote itself. It feels like l’ve been carrying this song around with me through so much change. She’s really seen me through a lot, and l know the song was waiting for me to be ready to write her.” Listen to “Times Like SIS” on FIRST, the playlist showcasing the best, freshest music from First Nations artists across Australia. It’s curated and updated every month by Wiradjuri original Jaja Dare—if you hear something you like, add it to your library.
