The History of Drum and Bass: 1996 (DJ Mix)

“I remember ’96 being a very busy year!” Peshay tells Apple Music, as his mix series documenting the scene reaches a point where D’n’B had well and truly breached the mainstream. “Drum ’n’ bass had become international. I remember pretty much living out of a suitcase in ’96, there were so many gigs all over the place it all became a bit of a blur at times.” The D’n’B don’s selections here are a potent reminder of what a productive time it was, with killer tracks from Goldie, DJ Die, Photek, Lemon D, Adam F, Andy C & Shimon, Roni Size & Reprazent and, of course, Peshay himself. “The drum ’n’ bass scene was growing at an exponential rate, with artists really starting to find their own signature sound,” Peshay says. “Some truly groundbreaking music was being made. A lot of the music being produced at that time has gone on to become legendary.”
