Zach John King struck gold with his song “Slow Down”. The small-town Georgia-born singer-songwriter found viral success with the confessional track, which takes narrative cues from the raw, emotional songwriting of Zach Bryan and sonically resembles the summery country pop of Kane Brown or Riley Green. That melody-forward, heart-on-his-sleeve vibe permeates this six-song collection, like on another fan-favourite track, “I Deserve a Heartbreak”. That song approaches power ballad territory as King considers his own role in a relationship gone south, with a fiery guitar solo at the track’s crescendo. Other highlights on the EP, helmed by Atlanta-based producer Ryan Wilson (Maverick City Music, Casting Crowns), include “She Didn’t Have To”, another vulnerable cut with a clever melodic structure, and closing track “Cold Shoulder”, which finds King’s aching voice at its breaking point as he sinks into romantic regret.
