Antidote

Antidote is home to the best new alternative music in the UK and beyond—a celebration of independence, innovation and artists who don’t just push boundaries but reduce them to rubble. This week, Rachel Chinouriri’s earworm “All I Ever Asked” is leading the playlist and she reveals the track was inspired by a phone call. “I was kind of writing about my heartbreak, but it wasn’t really clicking because I was still with my boyfriend at the time,” she tells Apple Music. “Then my friend called me and burst into tears. Her boyfriend had just broken up with her. I went into the studio, and I was like, ‘It was all I ever asked of you’ straight away. Friends tell me their heartbreak and stories, and I guess I just feel a lot when things happen, in proportions which I don’t really understand sometimes. I’m a heavy feeler. Songs come out quickly when there’s been a lot of trauma.” Reflecting on the importance of recognising your own worth, the track also sees Chinouriri shape her blend of alternative, electronic and pop in ways that call back a few decades—with echoes of New Wave and synth-pop allied to an irresistibly melodic chorus. “The producer, Jamie Lloyd-Taylor, was going for a very ’80s pop vibe and I hadn’t really written anything to that before. There’s a reason why they’re so timeless and effortless. My music has been quite complicated in the past and I’m like, ‘Maybe the body just needs simplicity and a strong message for it to be picked up in a certain way.’” You can also hear essential new music from NewDad, Sebastian Schub, Kae Tempest and Nilüfer Yanya this week. Like all the artists featured, Antidote is always evolving—so keep checking back, and if you hear something you like, add it to your library.
