The Sounds of Lagos

The Sounds of Lagos

For Africa Month, we asked a diverse group of artists, industry executives, tastemakers and influencers to help us curate the soundtrack of the city they call home. Here, they share what makes the sounds of their city unique. “The cosmopolitan city of Lagos is Nigeria’s cultural melting pot,” singer-songwriter and music executive Bankulli tells Apple Music. “The city plays a pivotal role in the commercial advancement of indigenous music like fújì and highlife. Lagos is home to many notable talents who pioneered Afrobeats and a major source of inspiration for a generation of stars who have evolved the sound and exported it to a global audience. The city’s eclectic mix of cultures and musical influences provides an endless source of inspiration and materials for the experimentation and innovation of Nigerian music, hence its unique position as the creative and spiritual capital of Afrobeats.” Of Nigeria’s cultural capital, celebrated producer and entrepreneur Don Jazzy says, “Lagos is a spirited city, and very rich in sonic history. There’s hustle, love, revolution and hope in the air. Stars have been born here, more than in any other African city, and there is a timelessness to the music that comes out of this city. ” Here, you’ll find tracks from stars like D’banj, Tiwa Savage, Davido, Wizkid, Burna Boy, SPINALL, Olamide, Asake and more. “Whether it’s the joy of love, the resilience of hustle or the nostalgia of home, these tracks connect us through rhythm and emotion,” singer-songwriter Aṣa explains. “It’s a celebration of sound that feels like life itself—honest, layered and deeply personal.” Additional curators for this tour of Lagos include music execs Bizzle Osikoya, Asa Asika, Tega Oghenejobo and Oluwaseun “Banko” Lloyd; and broadcasters Mannie Essien and Motolani Alake.
