She went from turning out twee online ukulele covers of the hits of rap royalty to becoming genuine pop royalty herself. It’s exactly the kind of trapeze act Elizabeth Tan—a.k.a. Lizzy—is master of, and her 2014 debut single “Knock Knock” seemed to reinvent Tan as a sensual R&B doyenne. Follow-up “Setia”, however, is lovestruck pop that goes back to her bedroom singer past. Even as she leans heavily on the former, Tan references local culture by using nursery rhyme and folk song in her playful pop numbers (“Police Entry” and “Shh”). It’s the pop ideal—an appeal as universal as it is sexy.
