Summertime Butch

Summertime Butch

Benny the Butcher released one stellar LP in 2024 with his Def Jam debut Everybody Can’t Go, but the Griselda affiliate wasn’t gonna let his breakthrough year come and go without providing some extra heat for the streets. The 10-track Summertime Butch is a concise walk through Benny’s life, with features from his Black Soprano Family crewmates Rick Hyde and more, and production from Harry Fraud. Despite the feel-good vibes of Benny basking in the summer glow, he refuses to stand down on opener “One Verse Butch,” which takes the format its title suggests. Benny goes in against haters and opps, proving why he’s one of the game’s most feared street rappers. He spits: “A lot of y’all don’t got the right to speak/Your money short, your ice look weak.” He doesn’t take a moment to play around on Summertime, always working to showcase the unique lens through which he sees the world. On “Kitchen Table,” Benny raps over a blaring synth chord and a head-nodding groove. He pays tribute to the overlooked kitchen table, noting that in classic coke raps, credit always goes to the Pyrex, the microwave, and the stove. Here, like always, Benny the Butcher does things just a little bit differently.
