BigXthaPlug kick-started his career thanks to the success of his Lone Star State anthem, aptly titled “Texas.” BigX first began releasing music in 2019, but it was on this pedal-steel-sampling, two-stepping hit from 2022 that the rapper showcased why he became such a bubbling presence in the state where everything is bigger. With his deep, belly-rumbling drawl and a music video that featured him riding a horse, BigX became more popular than Lone Star Beer with “Texas.” Rather than letting his affiliation with his home define him, he used the success to rap about childhood trauma, time in prison, and the reason he raps in the first place. He released his first album, Amar, in 2023, which is named after his son, and features him incorporating Southern rap sounds from Dallas, Houston, Louisiana, and Memphis into his instantly recognizable delivery. His 2024 project, TAKE CARE, finds him wrestling with his success, willing to give it all up if it means a better life for his children. It serves as the philosophy that animates BigXthaPlug’s entire career: a desire to create a world for his kids in which they never have to experience the turmoil that informs many of his songs.
